UNVEILING OF THE CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS OF A REPORT ON PREHOSPITAL EMERGENCY CARE IN QUÉBEC
AETMIS recommends the cautious and gradual introduction, in Québec, of advanced care by ambulance technicians
Montreal, April 13, 2005 – The Agence d'évaluation des technologies et des modes d’intervention en santé (AETMIS) is today unveiling the conclusions and recommendations of a report on the contribution of advanced care in Québec's prehospital emergency care system. According to the study, which was carried out at the request of the Minister of Health and Social Services, Philippe Couillard, the available data on advanced emergency care do not, at this time, justify widespread deployment in Québec. However, preliminary data seem to indicate that advanced care has a beneficial effect in certain specific cases. The Agency therefore recommends that, for now, advanced emergency care be introduced in a cautious and gradual manner, with priority given to the treatment of respiratory distress, chest pain and cardiopulmonary arrest. It also recommends various measures for optimizing basic prehospital care and the survival chain throughout Québec, specifically, by improving ambulance technician training.
